I. Прочитайте и письменно переведите на русский язык следующий текст:

First Impression

Hi, my name is Lars. I am 18 years old and come from England. I am a student at the Academy, where I study management. I spend one week of each month in different departments so that I learn various aspects of my future work. I am not a freshman. I am a second year student.

I get up early each morning and drive ten miles to my academy. I still find the time to learn German and French. In my spare time I like to go skiing and enjoy all water sports.

And now I am going to tell you about my family. We are a family of three. To begin with, I am going to talk first about my father. His name is Nick, he is 45. He works as a surgeon in a hospital. He is neither old, nor young. He is a good-looking man, handsome, rather thin with dark brown hair just beginning to go grey. He is a very sociable person. What I don't like about my dad is that he is always busy. Very often he works overtime. He is a bread-maker in our family. He is fond of going to the country on week-ends, because he enjoys working in the garden.

My mother's name is Mary. She works as a teacher at a nursery school. My mother is rather slim and pretty, she is always elegant and smart. In short, she is a pleasant-looking woman of about 40. She always has a lot of work to do both at school and about the house. She is fond of her work and spends a lot of time there. But she has to cook the food for all the family at home. Shopping and cooking are nearly half a day's work for her.

My family has a house on the Adriatic coast, so we all go there every summer for a month. I am very interesting in environmental issues, and would like to meet students from other countries who share my views.

вариант 1.

I. Прочитайте и письменно переведите на русский язык следующий текст:
I have recently become very worried about my 16-year-old son, Nick. Although he was never brilliant at school, he always used to get reasonably good marks. But his work has become so bad that his teachers say there is really no point in his staying on at school any longer. He used to be such a good swimmer that he won several prizes. But now he hardly ever goes to the pool to practice any more. And instead of the neat clothes he used to wear, all he ever puts on now is the same old pair of shabby jeans, and a dirty sweatshirt.

But that isn't all. Last Sunday, I got up earlier than usual. Nick was in the kitchen. The radio was on so loud that he didn't hear me come in behind him. My handbag was on the table. He had taken a ten-pound note out of it and was just about to put it in his pocket.

We had a terrible row! Finally, he broke down and confessed everything. There is a big amusement arcade near his school with all sorts of electronic games. They have games like Dark Invader and Space Warrior. I always thought they were harmless enough but Nick has been going there every day after school. He has become so hooked on playing those games that he will steal even from me, his own mother, to pay for the habit!

He has promised me that he won't go to the arcade again. But I think he is too addicted to stop. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't. And he doesn't. He has lost interest in everything else. What can I do to help him?

A leave school and do something else.

The Student and the Scientific - Technological Revolution

Today student has to assimilate a much greater amount of new information than, let us say, ten years ago, and this amount tends to grow.

Independent work claims a substantial share of the higher school student's time with lectures and seminars alternating with laboratory work, the heading and presentation of reports, discussion and participation in research work.

Today there have appeared “intermediaries” between science and the student such as television, computers, video tape records, etc. The process of assimilating knowledge having become more complex, more and more the student needs to acquire a researcher's skills. This can be done in students' scientific societies, study circles and at conferences. One out of two students takes part in these activities.

In most cases studies are combined with obligatory research in the field of automated control system, applied mathematics, mechanized processing of economic information. Specialists are also trained in rational utilization of natural resources and environmental protection.

During his student years the future specialist, who receives broad specialized training, has extensive production practice in the course of which he is paid a salary corresponding to the work he performs. After graduation (state examinations and the presentation of his diploma work) he is given a post enjoying all the rights of a specialist.

Education in England

One in three young people now go on to a higher education at college or university. Some young people defer their university entrance for a year or take a gap year. This year out of education often includes voluntary work and travel overseas. Some young people work to earn and save money to pay their university fees and living expenses.

People over 16 years of age may also choose to study at Colleges of Father Education or Adult Education Centres. This is a wide range of academic and vocational courses available as well as courses which develop leisure interests and skills.

A large part of study time is devoted to fundamental subjects. This enables future specialists to acquire greater professional knowledge and skills, assimilate modern methods of scientific research, advanced production technology, its organization and management. This provides a basis for the study of special subjects and the organization of production practice as a necessary condition of the students' professional training.

To train highly-skilled specialist with a wide theoretical and political outlook is the chief task of the institutions of higher learning.

The higher school aims to turn out highly-educated specialists whose training is not restricted to the present-day requirements of a narrow branch of production, let alone a concrete enterprise or institution.

There is a great demand for skilled workers and specialists more industrialized in the result of the scientific-technological revolution.

Higher Education in the U.K.

There are more than 60 universities in the U.K. The leading universities are Cambridge, Oxford and London. English universities differ from each other in traditions, general organization, internal government, etc. British universities are comparatively small, the approximate number is about 7-8 thousand students. Most universities have fewer than 3000 students, some even less than 1500 ones. London and Oxford universities are international, because people from many parts of the world come to study at one of their colleges. A number of well-known scientists and writers, among them Newton, Darvin, Byron were educated in Cambridge.

A university consists of a number of departments: art, law, music, economy, education, medicine, engineering, etc.

After three years of study a student may proceed to a Bachelor's degree, and later to the degrees of Master and Doctor. Besides universities there are 300 technical colleges at present in Britain, providing part-time and full-time education.

The organization system of Oxford and Cambridge differs from that of all other universities and colleges. The teachers are usually called Dons. Part of the teaching is by means of lectures organized by the university. Teaching is also carried out by tutorial system. This is the system of individual tuition organized by the colleges. Each student goes to his tutor's room once a week to read and discuss an essay which the student has prepared.

Some students get scholarship but the number of these students is comparatively small. There are many associates and clubs at Cambridge and Oxford. The most celebrating at Cambridge is the Debating Society at which students discuss political and other questions with famous politicians and writers. Sporting activities are also numerous.

It should be mentioned that not many children from the working-class families are able to receive the higher education as the fees are very high (more than L1000 a year). Besides that special fees are taken for books, for laboratory works, exams and so on.

  2. Is higher education free of charge?

I. Прочитайте и письменно переведите на русский язык следующий текст:

Martin and Rebecca Granger used to teach in a tough secondary school in London. Two years ago, they moved to a small cottage in Cornwall, in the extreme south-west of England. 'We got tired of trying to make kids learn things they had no interest in,' Martin says. Martin's mother had died, leaving the cottage to them. 'It was in a terrible state when we came. There were leaks in the roof. There wasn't even an indoor look. Rebecca and I have rebuilt the place with our own hands.

It is a pleasant, small place by the sea. In their large garden they grow most of their own vegetables and keep a goat. They also make all their own clothes. 'Money is still a problem, but we've learned to get by on very little'. Rebecca says. She does some part-time teaching in a school in the village nearby. Martin paints water-colours of the wild Atlantic and the brilliant sunsets they see almost every day. He has sold a few recently.

They both say what they value most is their freedom from the rat race and the pressures of life in a big city. Only one thing really bothers them, and that is the invasion of tourists every summer.

We've been very happy here, but we might immigrate to New Zealand, where we'd be even further away from it all,' Rebecca says.

Communicating

This word keeps cropping up. In all aspects of managing, and in all functions of the organization, the degree of success is directly related to the quality of communication. Communication is the «nervous system» of managing. It is both formal and informal. Management Information Systems, meetings, instructions, notice-boards, memos and so on are examples of formal communication. They are usually planned and specific.

Informal communications can be planned to some degree. If it is important that certain people speak to each other regularly, it may be arranged that their officers are close to one another. In this way, the people concerned will meet in the corridor or in the offices and chat. The «grapevine» (the channel for gossip) is the sort of informal communication that managers should try to keep to a minimum as it is almost certainly inaccurate and can even be mischievous. It often arises through lack of proper communication.

Business Hours

The standard working day in the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. starts at 9:00 a.m. and lasts till 5:00 p.m. with lunch time from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Many banks are usually open for customers from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some businesses and industries traditionally work different hours.

Most employees have a five-day working week, Monday through Friday. The working week is between 35 and 40 hours long. Overtime is quite common and is generally paid often to the basic rate of pay. The weekend usually starts on Friday night and lasts till Monday.

Thus on Saturdays and Sundays most businesses are closed. But as to shops they are open on Saturdays and some of them are open on Sundays.

In Britain the law does not say what shops can be open on Sundays but it says what goods can be sold on Sundays. They are newspapers, magazines and fresh food. If the law is broken, criminal proceedings may be taken. Many officials and the public demand that the Sunday trading rules should be abolished in the U.K.

Most businesses are closed on public and national holidays. All the main public or national holidays in the U.S. and U.K. are bank holidays, which mean banks are closed on those days. Besides there are some other bank holidays, when banks and many other businesses are closed.

Aaron Spelling is said to be the richest and most successful television producer in Hollywood and, in a city famous for its wealth, his wife, Candy, is the biggest spender. Not only will it have a more luxurious swimming-pool but an indoor ice-skating rink and a private zoo, as well. The final bill will come to at least $25 million.

They say that a few years ago, on a typically warm Californian Christmas Eve, Candy had a huge amount of real snow delivered to the Spelling mansion and spread all over the green lawns so that their children could enjoy 'a white Christmas'.

Not long ago Candy decided she needed a few more clothes. She had a whole fashion show flown out to her from New York, along with the designer and three models.
